August 28, 2003

It's been a few years since I started writing this diary.  Today I am updating my third website.

March 23, 1998

It's late, or early -- I suppose -- Monday morning at 2:08 AM.  The Cool Sexy One asked me, "who are you.," and I had to think.  Because she made me think, I dedicate this day's writings to The Cool Sexy One.

Who am I?  Why do I stay up so late putting stuff on this site.  What is my mission in life?  Am I simply a sex object, or am I a man with a mind -- or both? Who knows? Do I know?  I do know that I am a freshman at AASU, that's Armstrong Atlantic State University, in Savannah, Georgia.  Which brings up another question, why am I in Savannah.

Now, I have two questions.  Who am I, and why am I in Savannah.

I was born in NYC, the Bronx.  During my tender years I lived in Brooklyn, Flatbush and Bay Ridge.  What do I think about those years?  Perhaps if I can answer that question I'll know why I am in Savannah and who I am.  But, the night goes on and I grow tired.  My eyes burn.    The rippling  muscles of my broad back ache after hours of typing -- I cannot go on.  But, I promise, I will go on. Perhaps tonight.  Perhaps tomorrow.  Right now, I must stop typing.

March 23, 1998 5:28PM

My eyes are still burning.  I have a head ache.  But I must go on.  I thought about those early years, when my nickname was "Red," "Whip," and "Milty."  Sometimes, those who called me "Whip" actually called me, "Whip the Magnificent."  In my youngest days I had red hair.  By the time I was 13 my hair was brown, but my nickname was still 'Red," until I moved, and went to a housing project on Staten Island where someone said "Dick's a real clown, just like Milton Berle."  Thus was born my second nickname, "Milty."  "Whip the Magnificent," came as a nickname when I started pitching in league games, a few years later.  But, I've moved too far.  Let me go back to those formative years in Brooklyn.  Back to the gang wars and the gun fights.

We were friendly gangs.  We might follow a day of a gang fight or shootings by getting together and playing baseball the next day.  We were too poor to have big gangs.   Mine, the Brooklyn Boasters, only had about ten members.  When we wanted to play baseball or football we always had to recruit players from other gangs, especially the 78th Street gang.  They had some good ball players.  Now, I've got to close my eyes and revisit the faces and names of the Brooklyn gang.  I'll start typing again when I return from my eye closed visit to Brooklyn.

March 24, 1996

This morning I got a great note from Leanne. She was up all night, finishing a Russian Telecom paper.  She thanked me for helping her and said,"you came through for me!" She's working on Master's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning, up in the cold lands of Canada. She can't wait to be finished!  Besides thanking me for helping her with some research, Leanne pushed me to speed up my life's story.  She saw the monkey above and wanted to know if I was a monkey or "a real person - or just some virtual guru".  She wasn't sure what year is freshman year. (I love to get questions. You learn a lot from them. Until Leanne's email I always assumed Canadians called the first year of college the freshman year). She also wondered what I was taking at AASU and how old I am.  So, I dedicate this day's writings to Leanne, even though this part of the story doesn't really fit here.

I am a real person.  That's not me above, I am neither monkey nor virtual guru.  I'm just me, Dick.  Here in the USA our four undergraduate college years are called, freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior.  I'm a freshman -- the second time around.  I have a Master's degree in Computer Science and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, as well as a paraegal degree.   A few years ago I had a head injury and vegetated for a few years.  I had to learn to do basic things over again, like talking and driving.  Over the past few years I've improved, but I'll never be a computer scientist or technical manager again.  Since my verbal skills have regained a lot I decided to go back to college and get a few more degrees.  The fourth and fifth degree will be in education and political science.  I might go on and get a sixth degree in law.
